Matching Horoscopes for Marriage

Vedic astrology has a very elaborate method of judging matrimonial compatibility. This is usually called Melapak or Koota Milan, and is very popular in India. The purpose of this article is to apprise readers of the various components of the Melapak and how they are used for judging degree of compatibility between boy and girl from several aspects.

Most of the Melapak is based on the position of natal moon in the horoscope of the boy and the girl (as calculated using Vedic system of astrology only). The following Kootas (factors) are considered in order to judge the degree of compatibility between two horoscopes.

Gana
Nadi
Graha Maitri
Bhakoota

We will discuss each of these factors with an example, and we will also discuss some other Kootas which are also considered to be important. For the purpose of example we are assuming the following :

Moon in the horoscope of boy is in 24 degree of Taurus (Vrisha)
Moon in the horoscope of Girl is in 26 degree of Capricorn (Makar)

In the above table  we have to identify the row which corresponds to the 24 deg. of Taurus ( boy's moon). Similarly we have to identify the row for 26 deg. Of Capricorn ( girl's moon). Once we have identified the rows we can prepare the following sub-table.

Thus based on the degree of Moon of the boy and girl we have extracted the values which we would use to judge various Koota Milan.

 

. Understanding VARNA

Varna of the various Rasis are as below :

Varna of the boy should be superior to the Varna of the girl. Brahmina is the highest and Shudra is the lowest Varna. Allotment of point for Varna Matching can be seen in the below table.

Example : Boy is Taurus Rasi ie Vaishya Varna. Girl is Capricorn Rasi which is Vaishya Varna. Both belonging to same Varna. From table above its clear that 1 point is given. However, ideally Boy should belong to higher grade ie Varna.

2. VASHYA

Vashya means the degree of control over each other. The table below illustrates this compatibility. 2 points are given for Vashya Compatibility.

Example : Girl is Capricorn and the Boy is Taurus , so the Vashya compatibility is absent.

3. TARA

This is also called Dina Koota. Imagine the 27 stars to be in a circle. Identify the star of the Girl. From here count the star of the Boy. Divide the number by 9. If the remainder is 3 or 5 or 7 it is said to be malefic. Repeat the same process but this time start from Boy's star.

Example : Girl's star is Dhanista. From here if we count up to the Boy's star which is Mrigasira, we get 10. This divided by 9 gives a remainder of 1. Since its not 3 or 5 or 7 hence 1.5 points are given.

Counting from Boy's star the Girl's star is 19. This divided by 9 gives a remainder of 1. Since its not 3 or 5 or 7 hence 1.5 points are given. So 1.5 + 1.5 = 3. Hence 3 points for this matching.

4. YONI

Yoni Milan pertains to degree of physical compatibility. The allotment of points can be seen from the table below. In our example Boy belongs to Sarpa and the Girl belongs to Simha Yoni. From the table its evident that points are 2.

5. GRAHA MAITRI

Note down the natal Moon sign of both boy and the girl. Find out the planet who is the ruler of the sign. A planet has certain affinity with other planet. This can be seen in the following table.

In our example the Rasi of the boy is Taurus ruled by Venus. Rasi of the girl is Capricorn ruled by Saturn. So 5 points.

. BHAKOOTA OR RASI KOOTA

This compatibility takes into consideration the relative positions of Birth signs. If the signs are in 2/12, 5/9 0r 6/8 no point is given otherwise full 7 points are allotted. Boy is Taurus or 2 and Girl is Capricorn or 10.  Taurus/Capricorn are 5/9, hence no point.

 

7. GANA

Stars ( Nakshatras) are divided into three groups called (1) Deva (2) Manuj (3) Rakhas. The compatibility amongst these groups can be seen in the following table.

Boy is Deva and Girl is Rakhsasa hence no point.

8. NADI

Nadi is a very important factor. There are 3 Nadis. Aadi, Madhya and Antya. If Boy and the Girl have same Nadi no point is given, otherwise 8 points are given. In our example both Boy and the Girl have the same Nadi ie Madhya hence its not good and no points are given.

We have discussed the matrimonial compatibility from eight different angles. There are many 'ifs' and 'buts' to each of these factors. But we have gone for generally accepted method. We hope this will give an idea to the readers how the compatibility is usually done.
