Bhakoot Koota in Guna Milan: 6-8 and 2-12 Dosha, Cancellation Rules

Bhakoot Koota measures the distance between the two Moon signs — how far one partner's sign sits from the other's. It carries up to 7 of the 36 points in Guna Milan. That makes it the second-heaviest test after Nadi.

What Bhakoot means

Each koota is a single test, and the eight together make the match; Bhakoot is the seventh. It works on the rashi, the Moon sign — the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at birth. In the classical view, the Moon sign carries a person's emotional life: moods, habits, attachments, and the daily rhythm of the home.

Bhakoot counts the distance between the two Moon signs, both ways round the zodiac. Count the boy's sign as 1 and walk forward to the girl's sign. Then count her sign as 1 and walk forward to his. The two counts always pair up. If his Aries is 6th counted from her Scorpio, then her Scorpio is 8th counted from his Aries. That is a 6-8 pair. An Aries Moon with a Taurus Moon gives 2 one way and 12 the other. That is a 2-12 pair.

Seven pairs are possible: 1-1, 2-12, 3-11, 4-10, 5-9, 6-8, and 7-7. The whole test comes down to which pair the couple lands on.

How the points are scored

Bhakoot is all-or-nothing. Each distance pair is called an axis. A clean axis takes the full 7 points. An axis with dosha — a defect the texts flag — takes 0.

Note what this table flags and what it does not. The classical texts our engine follows treat only two axes as Bhakoot dosha. One is 6-8, called shashtashtaka (the six-eight placement). The other is 2-12, called dwirdwadasha (the two-twelve placement). The 6-8 axis is read as friction in daily rhythms — energy, health habits, and the give-and-take of the home. The 2-12 axis is read as strain around shared resources — earning, spending, and adjusting to each other's family customs.

Some popular calculators go further. They mark 5-9, or even 4-10, as dosha. That is a minority reading. The classical texts treat the mutual trines (5-9) and mutual angles (4-10) as clean, and our engine scores them at the full 7.

What a high score means

A 7 here means the two emotional bases sit on a supportive axis. Same-sign couples share one inner language. The 7-7 pair stands on the partnership axis itself — the classical texts treat two Moons face to face as the natural shape of husband and wife. The 3-11 pair points to friendship and growing gains. The 4-10 pair points to a natural split of home and public duties. The 5-9 pair points to shared values and easy mutual trust.

What a low score means

A 0 means the couple sits on the 6-8 or 2-12 axis. The classical texts ask the family to look closer — not to walk away. The 6-8 reading describes daily rhythms that pull in different directions unless the couple builds steady habits. The 2-12 reading describes money and household flow that needs open talk rather than mind-reading. Both are predictions of effort, not of unhappiness.

And before any conclusion is drawn, the cancellation rules must be checked. The same classical texts that name the dosha also name the conditions that dissolve it.

Cancellation rules

Our matching engine checks four classical cancellations whenever Bhakoot dosha appears. Any one of them cancels it.

Mutually friendly Moon-sign lords. Behind every Moon sign stands a ruling planet, its lord. If the planet ruling his Moon sign and the planet ruling hers are natural friends of each other, the classical texts read the dosha as cancelled. The warmth between the two ruling planets absorbs the friction of the axis. This is the same permanent friendship table used in Graha Maitri Koota.

Same nakshatra lord. The nakshatra is the birth star — the star position of the Moon at birth. Each nakshatra also has a ruling planet. If the same planet rules both partners' birth stars, the dosha is cancelled. One planet governs the deepest mental layer of both charts, and that shared thread outweighs the sign distance.

Two further rules sit in the classical record for stricter schools — schools that extend the dosha to axes our engine already scores as clean:

The 4-10 axis with friendly lords. Some families follow a school that also cautions the 4-10 pair. For them, mutual lord-friendship clears it. In our scoring, 4-10 is clean to begin with. So this rule exists as an honest note on the full classical record.

The 5-9 axis, boy ninth from girl. When the boy's Moon falls ninth counted from the girl's, some classical texts read a teacher-student bond that softens any 5-9 caution. They add an honest condition: the reading carries full weight only when the boy is meaningfully older. Age is a family judgement, not a chart computation. So this stays a note for the family astrologer. In our scoring, 5-9 is already clean.

If your score is low

Hold the order. A Bhakoot zero names an axis, not a fate. First, check the two live cancellations: friendly Moon-sign lords, or a shared nakshatra lord. Either one, and the classical texts read the dosha as cancelled outright. Second, weigh the remaining seven tests. A pair can lose all 7 Bhakoot points and still land a good total, especially when Nadi and Gana score well. Third, remember what the two flagged axes describe. They describe patterns a couple can manage — rhythm and money — not defects in either person.
