When two families sit down to discuss a marriage, one question comes up early. "How many gunas match?" This article explains exactly what that number means, where the 36 points come from, and how to read the result like a family astrologer would — calmly, and with the full picture in view.

What Guna Milan means

Guna Milan is the classical method of matching two birth charts for marriage. The name is plain Sanskrit — guna means quality or merit, and milan means meeting or matching. So Guna Milan is, literally, the matching of qualities.

The method is also called Ashtakoot Milan. Ashta means eight, and a koota is a single test or measure. Eight separate tests, each looking at one dimension of married life, each worth a different number of points. Add them up and the maximum is 36.

Almost everything in Guna Milan is read from the Moon. Specifically, from each person's rashi — the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at birth — and their nakshatra, the birth star, which is a finer 27-part division of the sky. This is why an accurate birth time matters. Shift the birth time enough to move the Moon, and the score changes.

The system comes from the classical texts. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra defines most of the eight koots, and later works such as Saravali and Muhurta Chintamani fill in the scoring detail and the cancellation rules. Astrologers across India have used this same framework for centuries.

The eight koots at a glance

Each koota carries a different weight. The lighter tests come first and the heavier ones last — the classics deliberately gave the most points to the areas they considered most serious for married life.

How the score bands read

A score of 33 is rare and worth celebrating. A score of 24 is a perfectly healthy match — most happy marriages sit in the good band. The average band clears the basic line, but only just, so the classics ask both families to look at which koots dropped points, not just the total. And below 17, especially in the single digits, the traditional advice is to slow down and take the full charts to a senior astrologer — not to walk away on the number alone.

What the total does — and does not — decide

Here is the part many online calculators skip. The total is a screening measure, not a verdict.

What a good total tells you is that the two Moons sit well together — that the day-to-day emotional texture of the marriage starts from harmony rather than friction. That is genuinely valuable information. The Moon governs mood, instinct, and home life, which is where a marriage is actually lived.

What the total does not do:

1. It does not check Mangal Dosha. The Mars condition is examined separately, alongside Guna Milan, from each chart on its own. A pair can score 30 and still need the Mangal Dosha check done properly.
2. It does not read the seventh house, the marriage house, in either chart. A full matching looks at both.
3. It does not weigh character, family circumstances, or the conversations the couple has actually had. No classical astrologer ever claimed it did.
4. It does not predict specific events. It describes starting conditions, the way soil quality describes a field before anything is planted.

So treat the number the way the tradition intends. A strong score is a green light to proceed to the deeper questions. A weak score is a reason to look closer — never a reason to panic.

Doshas and their cancellations

Three of the eight koots carry a dosha — a flagged defect — when they fail badly. Bhakoot dosha arises on specific Moon-sign axes. Nadi dosha arises when both partners share the same nadi, and it is the heaviest single flag in the system. Gana dosha arises from the harshest temperament mismatch.

The classics did not stop at flagging these. They wrote cancellation rules — specific chart conditions under which a dosha stands neutralised. The best known examples: mutual friendship between the two Moon-sign lords can cancel Bhakoot dosha, and a shared Moon sign can cancel Nadi dosha. Saravali and Phaladeepika carry several more.

• Gana Koota (6 points) — groups the birth stars into three temperament classes and scores how the two classes live together.
• Bhakoot Koota (7 points) — measures the sign-distance between the two Moons. Certain axes are flagged as dosha; the rest score full marks.
• Nadi Koota (8 points) — the heaviest test. It compares the constitutional channel of each birth star, and the classics tie it to the health of the couple and their children.
