How to Read Your Kundli: A Starter Guide

A kundli looks confusing at first. It is a square full of triangles, numbers, and short names like "Ma" and "Sa". Many families keep one in a drawer and wait for a pandit to read it aloud. You do not have to wait. The chart follows a small set of rules. Once you know them, you can find the important answers yourself. This guide teaches those rules, one at a time.

What a kundli actually is

A kundli — also called a janam kundli, or birth chart — is a map of the sky at the exact minute you were born, seen from the place you were born. It records where the nine planets of Indian astrology stood among the twelve signs at that moment. Nothing in it is guessed. It is calculated from your date, time, and place of birth, the same way an almanac calculates a sunrise.

This is why the exact birth time matters so much. The chart changes about every two hours, because a new sign rises in the east every two hours. Two children born in the same town, a few hours apart, have different charts. If your family only remembers "around evening", even a careful reading can point at the wrong rising sign. So find the birth time before anything else.

The North Indian diamond layout

Most families in North India use the diamond-style chart. This guide follows that layout. Picture a square with an X and a + drawn through it. That makes twelve spaces — four diamonds in the middle band and eight triangles around the edges.

One rule unlocks the whole chart. In the North Indian layout, the houses stay fixed and the signs move. The large diamond at the top centre is always house 1. From there, the houses run anti-clockwise. House 2 is the triangle to its upper left. House 3 is below that. House 4 is the left-centre diamond. The count continues around the chart until house 12, which sits to the upper right of house 1.

The numbers written inside the spaces are the signs. They are counted 1 to 12 starting from Aries: 1 is Aries, 2 is Taurus, 3 is Gemini, and so on up to 12, Pisces. The sign number in the top diamond is your rising sign. Every other sign follows in order around the chart.

Lagna: where the chart begins

The lagna is the sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at your birth minute. It is also called the ascendant, or rising sign. The lagna becomes house 1, and every other house is counted from it. The classical texts treat the lagna as your body and temperament: how you carry yourself, and how you meet the world.

So the first thing to read on any kundli is the number in the top diamond. That single number tells you which sign owns each of the twelve houses.

The twelve houses: one life, twelve rooms

Each house stands for one area of life. Think of them as twelve rooms in one house. Every room matters, but you visit some more often than others. The table below lists the life areas the classical tradition assigns. An AstroMaitri kundli report walks through the same areas, house by house.

To read a house, ask two questions. Which planets sit in it? And where is its lord — the planet that rules the sign placed in that house? A house can be empty and still be strong, if its lord sits well elsewhere.

The nine planets (grahas), in brief

Indian astrology reads nine grahas — "planets" in the loose classical sense. The list includes the Sun, the Moon, and two shadow points. Each carries a nature of its own:

• Sun (Surya) — the self, confidence, the father
• Moon (Chandra) — the mind, emotions, the mother
• Mars (Mangal) — energy, courage, drive
• Mercury (Budh) — speech, intellect, trade
• Jupiter (Guru) — wisdom, growth, children, blessings
• Venus (Shukra) — love, comfort, beauty, marriage happiness
• Saturn (Shani) — discipline, patience, delay, hard-won results
• Rahu — the north node, a shadow point of hunger and ambition
• Ketu — the south node, a shadow point of detachment and instinct

A planet's strength depends on where it stands. In one sign a planet is exalted, meaning at its strongest. In the opposite sign it is debilitated, meaning at its weakest. A good report marks these for you. It also marks retrograde motion — when a planet appears to move backwards in the sky. Nakshatras: the 27 birth stars

Behind the twelve signs sits a finer wheel of 27 nakshatras, or birth stars. Each nakshatra covers 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the sky. Each one divides into four quarters, called padas. The nakshatra that matters most is the one holding your Moon. That is your janma nakshatra — your birth star. It shapes the texture of your mind, just as the Moon sign shapes your broad mood.

The birth star also does practical work in matrimony. Traditional name-letters come from it. Several parts of horoscope matching are counted from the birth stars of the two charts. When elders ask "what is the nakshatra?", this is what they mean.

Dashas: the timetable of the chart

A chart shows what is promised. The dasha system — a calendar of planetary periods — shows when. The classical system used here is called Vimshottari. It divides life into stretches of years, each ruled by one of the nine planets. A main period is called a mahadasha. Inside each main period run shorter sub-periods, called antardashas.

The idea is simple. A promise in the chart tends to come true when the planets connected to it get their turn to rule the calendar. For example, a strong seventh house tends to bring marriage during the periods of the planets tied to that house. Your report lists the current main period and sub-period, and the upcoming ones, with their dates. So you can see which chapter you are standing in right now.

Where to look first

You now have all the pieces. When you open your own kundli, read it in this order:

1. The lagna. The sign in the top diamond, and where its lord sits. This is the frame of your temperament.
2. The Moon. Its sign and its nakshatra. This is your emotional nature. It is also the base from which matching is done.
3. The 7th house. The house of marriage. See which planets sit in it, and which aspect it — watch it from another house. Also note where its lord has gone. Check Venus too. The classical texts treat Venus as the planet of marriage happiness.
4. The current dasha. Which planet rules your years right now, and what that planet promises in your chart.

One more chart is worth knowing once these basics feel comfortable: the navamsa, also called D9. It is a finer division of the main chart. The classical tradition reads it as the marriage chart — a second opinion on everything the 7th house promises. Your report shows the main chart (D1) and the navamsa (D9) side by side. When you are ready, compare the two before drawing conclusions about partnership.
